Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus (varicella-zoster) in the body. It leads to a painful rash, often with blisters, and can sometimes result in long-lasting nerve pain known as post-herpetic neuralgia. The risk of shingles increases with age, particularly in people over 50. The shingles vaccine helps protect against developing the condition and reduces the severity of symptoms if it does occur.
