The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common virus that spreads through skin-to-skin contact, often during sexual activity. Most HPV infections cause no symptoms and go away on their own, but some types can lead to genital warts or increase the risk of certain cancers, including cervical, anal, and throat cancers. The HPV vaccine helps protect against the most harmful strains of the virus and is most effective when given before becoming sexually active.
